Study Rooms

The library has the following study rooms available for use:

Children's Department

Two (2) "study caves" (three sided rooms) in the Children's Department, open on a first-come, first serve basis. No sign in required to use these rooms. Please contact the library at 630-759-2102 ext. 4181 for the Children's Department.






The Vortex
Two (2) study rooms in the Vortex, the teen area of the library. A library card, Vortex ID or school ID for each person in the room is required to use the room. Room capacity is six students at a time and is limited to those in grades 6 through 12. There is a one-hour time limit on these rooms if others are waiting to use the rooms. Third Floor Study Rooms 

Six (6) study rooms on the 3rd floor are available for individual or group use. A Fountaindale Public Library card in good standing of the primary person using the room is required. Study room capacities are four people or less. There is a two-hour time limit on these rooms if others are waiting to use the rooms. Note: As of August 4, 2014, the library will no longer accept a picture ID for use of the study rooms. An individual or one member of a group must have a valid Fountaindale Public Library card in good standing. Two rooms are able to be booked in advance (see below for policy and acceptance button to be taken to the room booking system). All rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis.


The Fountaindale Public Library district provides study rooms to serve the needs of the Library and the Fountaindale community. Use of the study rooms is governed by the policy established by the Library Board of Trustees and any applicable rules or regulations adopted by the Library. The Library Director as the executor of the policy for the Board of Trustees has discretion in determining what use is "in the best interest of the Library" and is authorized to act accordingly, including limiting the use of the study rooms by individuals whose activities interfere with Library operations, adversely affect public safety, or cause public disturbances. The Board of Trustees may modify, amend or supplement this policy, as it deems necessary and appropriate.


Study rooms are available in two hour intervals on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge for Fountaindale Library cardholders in good standing. Extra time allotted for study room sessions will be accommodated if there are no requests for use of the room within the next half hour. Those individuals or groups who have been allotted additional time in study rooms beyond the two hour limit will be asked to vacate if all study rooms are filled and a new party wishes to utilize a room.


Individuals 5th grade and under must be accompanied by a person at least 18 years of age.

Each group study room has a capacity of four people. At least one person in a study room must be a Fountaindale Public Library cardholder. The Fountaindale Library cardholder who books the room is expected to remain in the room at all times. Should the cardholder need to leave the room for any reason, it is expected they return in no more than 10 minutes.

There is no guarantee of a silent atmosphere inside each study room due to their proximity to one another; however, users of each study room are asked to be respectful of other patrons in adjacent study rooms and of the Library's conduct policy regarding noise.

Two study rooms on the third floor of the Library will be made available for advanced reservation. The person making a reservation must be a Fountaindale Public Library cardholder 12 years or older and in good standing. No reservations will be accepted for Saturdays and Sundays.

Because of the general demand for use of the study rooms, reservations for a maximum session of two hours may not exceed one per day. A person who has used a group study room on any given day as part of a group may not have another session as part of another group at the library on that day. Groups may not obtain additional sessions by having different members of the group make a reservation for the same, substantially the same or similar groups.


Individuals 12 years and older are encouraged to visit the 3rd floor Reference Desk to request the use of study rooms. Study rooms are available for use during Library open hours only. Rooms must be vacated at library closing, or at the end of the scheduled session, whichever comes first.

Requests for advance reservation of the 2 study rooms are accepted no more than 90 days and no less than 3 days in advance of the requested date. Instructions for advance reservations may be found on our website. The applicant will receive approval or denial of most requests within 3 week days.

An individual or group may have no more than one advance reservation per week day.


Upon arrival, individuals requesting the use of a study room must check in at the Library's 3rd floor Service Desk. Availability will be reviewed at this time and reservations will be taken if all study rooms are in use. Study room users are asked to notify Library staff when the session is finished. The room will then be inspected for condition.

Groups may not rearrange Library furniture. Signs and decorations may not be taped or stapled to walls or doors. Use of glue, crayons, paint, markers, tape, glitter, wax, candles (lit or unlit) and other craft supplies is prohibited. Study rooms are to be left as they are found. Waste must be placed in appropriate garbage and/or recycling receptacles. No food or open drinks are allowed in study rooms.

Once a room has been vacated for more than 10 minutes, the Library reserves the right to remove the user's belongings without assuming responsibility or liability thereof and to reassign the study room to an available status.


The Library does not provide equipment and/or storage.


No person or group may assign its reservation to another person or group. Individuals are asked to inform the 3rd Floor Reference desk if a study room is no longer needed so that it can be reassigned to an available status. Patrons who have not arrived within 10 minutes of the scheduled start time will be considered no-shows and the reservation will be removed. Patrons who show up late will not have extended reservations. Failure to provide 2 hours notice of a cancellation will be grounds for suspension of study room privileges.


Failure to comply with Library policies, rules and regulations (including this policy) will be grounds for suspension of study room privileges for up to six months.


The Library is not responsible for possessions left in a study room or moved by staff to another location.

Any individual using the study room shall be held responsible for willful or accidental damage to the Library building, grounds, collections or furniture caused by the individual or group in accordance with the Meeting Room Policy and Library Conduct Policy.

Fountaindale Public Library cardholders who book a room understand that they take full responsibility for the actions of themselves and anyone in their group and will be held accountable for violations of this policy or the Library Conduct Policy.


The Board of Trustees of the Fountaindale Public Library District will review the study room policy and regulations periodically and reserves the right to amend them at any time. The Board authorizes the Library Director to waive regulations under appropriate circumstances. The Library Director is the chief person empowered to make decisions regarding the availability and use of the study rooms. The Library Director has delegated authority to approve study room requests to the Adult and Teen Services Department staff.

Any appeals for changes to, or exceptions to, any portion of the study room policy will be considered. An individual wishing to file an appeal shall submit it to the Library Director in writing. The Library Director will respond in writing.


How to Book a Room

1. If you accept the above policy, click on the acceptance button below (Yes, I have read...)

2. Enter your library card number on the next screen. If the card is expired, has over $20 in fines and/or fees, or is no longer in the system, you will get a notification that you cannot book a room. You will need to visit the Circulation Department on the 1st Floor to resolve any issues with your card before you can book a room.

3. If your card is in good standing, you will get the room booking screen. Anything marked with an asterisk (*) needs to be filled in or answered. Please note that maximum room capacity is four (4) people and the system will reject any number larger than four (4).

4. Click the verify request button. You will get a verification screen. Verify the information and then click submit request.

A staff member will contact you if there is an issue with the reservation. Please remember to cancel a reservation at least 24 hours in advance. Room reservations cannot be modified. If you require a different day and/or time, you will need to cancel your existing request by calling us and then making a new reservation using this system, subject to availability and to the three (3) days in advance rule.
